David, xorg does not need an xorg.conf anymore, and it should not be a
problem if it's empty. In fact, if people have a problem, I often ask
them to remove their xorg.conf to verify that the problem is generic.
Hardware acceleration was disabled for some chipsets when Jaunty shipped
because of some stability bugs (it's better to give people a stable
desktop without fancy stuff than one that crashes). Some of these bugs
have been fixed and hardware acceleration has been enabled in the
updates. I'm not sure of this is the case for the G35 chipset, but if
the updates fixes the problem, there is not really anything more that
can be done.
I'm closing this bug. Feel free to reopen it by setting its status back
to "Confirmed" if it comes back, for example if you make xorg.conf emtpy
again.
