Guy, the line
 Driver "intel"
in the "Device" section does exactly nothing on Jaunty, since this is the
default anyway. So you probably experienced a random bug that disappeared
next time you started xorg to check if the change to xorg.conf had done
anything.

While I believe that you saw a real problem, unless you can make it come
back there is not really anywhere we can start to find out what the
problem was. I'm therefore closing this bug for now. If you later
realize that this occurs in a specific situation or randomly in, say, 1
out of 20 times you start your computer, you may reopen this bug by
setting the status back to "New".

** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)
       Status: Confirmed => Invalid

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” source package in Ubuntu: Invalid

Bug description:
Binary package hint: xorg

Upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 jaunty jackalope.
The maximum display resolution available in the settings was now 1028 by
800, and not the right shape for my laptop, leaving unused space at both
sides of the screen.

I fixed this by editing xorg.conf (gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf) and
stating that the intel driver is to be used, thus:

Change from:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

To:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "intel"
EndSection

Now the 1280 x 768 I need for this Sony Vaio VGN-N270E is available as a
display setting and is working fine.

However, this appears to be a 9.4 upgrade bug. When I originally installed
8.10 the display driver worked right away, without any set up needed by me.
This problem is relatively trivial and easy to workaround, but I fear many
users will simply revert to 8.10 when they can't immediately set up the
display in 9.4.
