Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: dmraid
Distribution: Ububutu Jaunty 9.04 AMD64
Package Version: dmraid_1.0.0.rc15-6ubuntu2_amd64.deb / libdmraid1.0.0.rc15_1.0.0.rc15-6ubuntu2_amd64.deb
Background:
I installed jaunty to an ext4 file system on a raid 0 array (fakeraid on
a NF4 chipset comprised of 2x 250 gb seagate drives) using the alternate
install cd - the installer didn't automatically detect my array so i
opened up a shell in the installer environment and called dmraid -ay
which found my array - after which i could install normally.
What I expected to happen:
I expected the computer to boot an load the login screen
What happened instead:
The machine got to the splash / loading screen where the indicator
bounces from left to right in the load progress bar - after about 20
seconds it drops to the busy box shell issuing an error:
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/mapper/nvidia_caghibdf1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
How I went about fixing the problem:
At the initramfs prompt I typed: dmraid -ay
I can't remember what the output was, but it was a solution that worked
for others, however when i typed: exit
the system hung and I couldn't do anything.
I booted using the amd 64 live cd (not the alternate install), installed
dmraid by typing: sudo apt-get install dmraid
I then had to manually activate the arrays (which i didn't have to do in
intrepid) with: sudo dmraid -ay
then i mounted the array to /mnt, chrooted to the install drive and
installed dmraid_1.0.0.rc14-2ubuntu12_amd64 and the corresponding
library from the intrepid repository by manually downloading and
installed using dpkg, then called update-initramfs and update-grub and
re booted.
I got the same error as before except now when i call dmraid -ay
followed by exit the system boots normally
** Affects: dmraid (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
