I got the same problem.  The same system.  Here is my error message.

applekid at applekid-desktop:~$ sudo nvidia-settings
Launching a SCIM daemon with Socket FrontEnd...
Loading simple Config module ...
Creating backend ...
Loading socket FrontEnd module ...
Starting SCIM as daemon ...
GTK Panel of SCIM 1.4.7

#after i press ¨save to X .....¨, than...

VALIDATION ERROR:  Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Undefined Device "(null)" referenced by Screen "Default Screen".
