I can confirm this happening on jaunty i386.

I have a Dell XPS m1530 with an nvidia 8600M GT running driver 180. When
I run "metacity --replace" this issue goes away but then there's no more
compiz of course.

I am using resolution 1440x900 on the laptop display an 1680x1050 on the
second display, with separate x-screens.

I remember this happening on intrepid too with driver 177. Reverting to
driver 173 was a solution for me then.
