I had the same problem and was able to correct it using Patrick Healy's
patch.

I'm running up-to-date Ubuntu 9.04 x86_64.

network-manager: 0.7.1~rc4.1.cf199a964-0ubuntu2
network-manager-gnome: 0.7.1~rc4.1-0ubuntu2
network-manager-vpnc: 0.7.1~rc4.20090316+bzr21-0ubuntu

Please let me know if there's any testing, etc... I can do to speed up
the release of the "real solution" Alexander mentions above.
