Hi Brian,
i needed to install the following packages to compile nedit from source:

libmotif-dev, libmotif3,libxp-dev

then,

tar -xpvzf nedit_5.6~cvs20081118.orig.tar.gz
cd nedit-5.6/makefiles/
make linux

...

that worked fine :-)

Now, hopefully the copy & paste bug is  gone on my fresh installed
jaunty.
