thanks Matthias for the tip, that really helped!

In nicotine+ 1.2.9 on Ubuntu Jaunty, after deactivating the tray icon,
up to now my nicotine instance has been running for about 16 h (before
it crashed every 10-30 min, this behavior started with the upgrade to
Jaunty).

It seems reasonable that Matthias' problem is related - probably my
nicotine crashes happened after changing the download rate etc. on the
tray tooltip, as they were very infrequent but definitely related to the
program's activity.
