are you using kubuntu or ubuntu ?

no output on the terminal means => 
1) you type "emerald --replace" and the terminal go to a new line and say nothing ?
2) the process is stuck, you need to make ctrl+c ?
3) you got a "completed" but you have no emerald running ?
