Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kopete-cryptography

I am using kopete-cryptography 1.3.0-kde4.2.0-0ubuntu4 together with
kopete 4:4.2.3-0ubuntu1~jaunty1~ppa1 from the kubuntu-ppa repository to
avoid other kopete-cryptography related bugs
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kopete-
cryptography/+bug/293146 ) with jaunty for amd64.

I have noticed two issues. The first is filed as bug #377457. This is
the second one.

While Ubuntu seems to use UTF-8 in most places, including unencrypted
jabber messages, I found that encrypted jabber messages are not encoded
in UTF-8. Using wireshark, I locally intercepted an encrypted jabber
message sent to myself and decrypted it manually with gnupg. According
to file(1) the message is encoded in ISO-8859.

Furthermore, encrypted messages are also decrypted as ISO-8859. So the
result of the wrong encoding is only visible when communicating with
someone who uses UTF-8.

There is no way to change the encoding for kopete-cryptography via the
plugin options panel in kopete.

Personally, I can think of no reason why one might want to use a
language dependent legacy encoding for encrypted messages.

(Again, please tell me if I should stop reporting bugs involving ppa
packages here. )
