Sorry - I think I read your post too quickly.

When you say "built from source" and "compiled with encryption" do you
mean from the actual netatalk source or are you just re-packaging the
.deb from the ubuntu repositories ?

And - have you tried it with Jaunty, yet ?  I believe jaunty saw a
significant upgrade to the netatalk package (no more work around for
encryption, I believe).

If you are troubleshooting your connection, check the logs on both the
Mac and Ubuntu box and see what the "real" error is that is being thrown
when you try and mount the volume (/var/log/syslog, I think on Ubuntu).
That may help diagnose what's causing your error.
