Problem still unresolved on my system - NB I am running 32 bit:

root at x3:/var/log# uname -a
Linux x3 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

I am fully up to date with the latest packages - update manager shows no
updates, ditto for apt-get update & upgrade.

Have found that turning off the visual effects (in appearance settings)
has improved performance significantly and made it less of a nuisance to
use.

Hoping for word of a fix soon.
