/usr/bin/gnome-ppp is fine, and doesn't need to have the group
"dialout".

Could you please attach your /var/log/dmesg file after booting with the
modem plugged in?

In theory, dgc modems shouldn't need a driver any longer under Karmic,
and should automatically show up as /dev/ttyACM0.
