Well, my workaround seems to have succeeded. The 32 bit version of
xtightvncserver fixes the crashing (or seems to so far). To workaround
the bug, you'll need to login via ssh or locally since xrdp is buggy and
will crash before you can enter the commands. But the commands to
workaround the bug are (assuming you have ia32-libs installed already):
$ wget http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/universe/t/tightvnc/tightvncserver_1.3.9-4_i386.deb
$ sudo dpkg -r tightvncserver
$ sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture tightvncserver_1.3.9-4_i386.deb
So far, my setup seems stable like this, but for some odd reason, the
close, minimize, tile buttons in the window bar are missing. Also,
Firefox draw things strangely - it seems to be missing numerous lines in
the interface (like between toolbars, around some buttons, in menus,
etc). Not sure if its related to this fix (I hadn't used xrdp enough on
this setup before I fixed it to remember if there were there or not),
but I think it might be.
