Hello, 
Exactely the same problem exists on my Lenovo G550 notebook with Kubuntu 9.10 (all updates run). On Skype the webcam works fine.
webcam-server is a cool application so it would be great if this gets fixed. 
Is the real cause for this already identified? Than may be I could help. May be problem in initialization and therefore it is not possible to read. 
Can I put some print outs to the source and post results here to help? Just tell me what info is needed.
Is there any similar application I can use meanwhile, or some work-around?
