And so... Any resolution to this?

I guess this will teach us all not to buy hardware that does not provide
source for or otherwise open drivers and/or specifications.

I will NEVER, EVER buy another Brother product again so long as they
continue to not provide open drivers.  And I will advise friends and
colleagues to never buy Brother products.
