Public bug reported:

~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:	Ubuntu 8.10
Release:	8.10
----------------------
me at somehost:~$ apt-cache policy libchm1 (now, after install)
libchm1:
  Installed: 2:0.39-9
  Candidate: 2:0.39-9
  Version table:
     2:0.39-9 0
        500 http://au.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/universe Packages
 *** 2:0.39-9 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
--------------------------------------
Expected: to install gnochm & dependencies via aptitude.

What happened instead:
It failed during cleanup:
Unpacking libchm1 (from .../libchm1_2%3a0.39-9_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libchm1_2%3a0.39-9_i386.deb (--unpack):
 fork failed: Cannot allocate memory
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
 fork failed: Cannot allocate memory
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
 fork failed: Cannot allocate memory
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/libchm1_2%3a0.39-9_i386.deb
Processing was halted because there were too many errors.
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
aptitude now reports for the 3 packages involved:
pi gnochm - CHM file viewer for GNOME
H A libchm1 - library for dealing with Microsoft CHM fil
piA python-chm - Python binding for CHMLIB
-------------------------------------------------
Well, my memory was probably maxed out:
x at y:~$ free -t
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 124880 122420 2460 0 152 27232
-/+ buffers/cache: 95036 29844
Swap: 361420 267872 93548
Total: 486300 390292 96008

So I'm not sure it is a bug. But the crash applet recommended filing, so
I'll continue.
