[NOTE: it's all on Ubuntu 8.04 and there is no way to get older versions
of Google Earth]

Success!
You can now install the package with e.g. sudo dpkg -i <package>.deb
[then I try and install the resulting 'googleearth-
package_0.5.6ubuntu1_all.deb' with GDebi Package Installer. No errors
are reported. Then, launching googleearth I get...]
> googleearth
Failed to load "/lib/libIGGfx.so" because "/lib/libIGGfx.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
