Interestingly enough, simply using 'xrandr -s 1280x1024' is enough to
restore the display to the original size. Here's the output of 'xrandr'
after exit from SMC, but before re-size, and then the resize.

> xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1280
VGA_1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 350mm x 280mm
   1280x1024 75.0 + 59.9
   1024x768 75.1*
   800x600 75.0 60.3
   640x480 75.0 60.0
TV_SVIDEO disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-I_1/digital disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-I_1/analog disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
