another update after upgrading and testing today:
xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu1
Linux 2.6.31-12-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP

The bug still occurs. Fn+F7 (LCD/CRT switch combo) is back to being a
quick fix; I get the screen back if I hit it once or twice (usually
once).
