Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-alsamixer

I down loaded Ubuntu 9.10 Beta because I couldn't get sound to work
under 9.04. I'm using a gateway 7326 laptop. After the installation
was complete I still had NO SOUND. I searched the internet to no avail.
I decided to look through Synaptic and see if maybe I needed another
package. I noticed that gnome alsa mixer was not loaded. I remember
that in all the reports in 9.04 the Gnome ALSA Mixer was always asked to
be loaded so I did. Still NO SOUND. I was just about ready to throw
this thing out when I recalled someone mentioning something about an
EXTERNAL AMPLIFIER. I opened up the Gnome ALSA Mixer and to my surprise
the external amplifier was checked. I had the Rythmbox player running
when I unchecked it. Hopefully my hearing will recover LOL. I now have
sound.

I would have expected this to be set to use the systems internal
amplifier or at best some prompt given the first time you attempt to use
sound so one is aware that there is an external amplifier setting and
how to change it.

It was so rewarding to know I didn't have to load all that other software I saw listed in the forums. That was scary!

I HAVE SOUND!
