Thanks ergod for the solution!

I upgraded to kernel 2.6.31-12-386 and it works again fine.
I followed the wiki and documented the steps (in German) here: http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/nach-update-nur-noch-low-graphics-mode/ where people have the same bug.
