Yes I forgot to mention that I reverted back to metacity so no more
emerald until its fixed.  I have just attempted to load a very simple
configuration containging one variable $sysname The system froze just
the same as before with the standard conkyrc.  I also attempted to run
top throughout this process however that simply froze and would not
update with the correct information.

I attempted to powerdown using your suggestions ctrl-c and alt-ctrl-
backspace had no effect.  An interesting point was when I tried to conky
-v for the installed version.  This did exactly the same thing as when I
attempt to run any .conkyrc.  It completely froze up again and had to
power down at switch again.  Synaptic reports that I have version 1.7.2
installed so I completely removed then installed again and now it seems
to work fine now with all the scripts.

So thanks for the help problem solved
