I have the same issue:

Linux paguro 2.6.31-14-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 13 16:47:28 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
running on AMD Phenom(tm) 8650 Triple-Core Processor

package: VMware-Player-2.5.3-185404.x86_64.bundle from official VMware
website.

I attach the ps uaxww output. I tried waiting for some minutes, but it
looks stuck there, like it can't compile the modules.
