I got higher resolution terminals working with GRUB_GFXMODE by using
vesafb. I roughly followed these instructions:
http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/54 ignoring the vga= bit for
grub. Also i worked around the no tty at all by removing "quiet" and
"splash" from the grub defaults, but if todays update to usplash fixed
something (i think it has to give the terminal a chance to load before X
else it doesn't work) i might put them back in and see if it still
works.
