Can you confirm whether this is gnome screensaver doing this, or the X
power management?

You can confirm it's gnome-screensaver if when it happens you ssh in and
killall gnome-screensaver and the display comes back.

That would mean that the gnome-screensaver inhibition stuff isn't
working.
