I suspsect a problem with python 2.6, qemulator was developed for python 2.4 and the upstream author has declared the compatiibility only with the 2.4 version. There are many upstream bug archived with the compatibility issue, waiting for the new version of qemulator...

I've done an experimental version that tries to correct some of these
compatibility problems.

Can you try what you get with this package? you can find it on mentors:

http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/q/qemulator

another try possibile is to change the default python interpreter to 2.5
to see the differences.
