Another forum suggested entering the following from the console:
xrandr -s 640x480
xrandr -s 800x600
xrandr -s 1024x600

It instantly brought back 1024x600 to my eeepc running easy peasy
(ubuntu).

Have not rebooted to see how long the fix lasts.
