The intention was to use alsa directly but with pulseaudio on the system
it's anybody's guess as to what is actually happening. 

is there some test program to make sure that 5.1 spdif is actually
working directly using the alsa driver for SB Audigy 2 ZS.

It's very hard to understand what in the chain has stopped working.
