You should not have to rebuild pcscd if you use a version of pcsc-lite
>= 1.5.4 (June 2009)

- if RFAddReader() fails with the libhal scheme then we try with the
  (old) libusb scheme.  This patch should allow proprietary drivers to
  work even if pcsc-lite is compiled with libhal support.

Ubuntu karmic does NOT yet have this version. You may need to wait until
Ubuntu 10.04 to have it by default.
