OK, I can reproduce this using a Cyrillic font ("larm1440" is the exact
TeX font that gets used). I will check in something like your patch to
avoid the exception, but it doesn't really fix the root problem, which
is that for whatever reason matplotlib.dviread fails to obtain the font
metrics for the я character. The typeset output is wrong after the
patch, but at least it doesn't crash.
