grumble.

I just now found out, that the menu with my login name is gone by design
(not by accident) because there is a new menu under "System"

But this doesn't change anything about the fact, that 
a) OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet produces the error message
b) I can't change the language without logging out.

Detail: when I try this over, on the log in screen the language I changed before is active - but not in the GNOME.
(that means when I first log in with German, then try to switch user and take English, gnome keeps German but in the login screen the next time English is chosen)

Perhaps is not expected that user ernst wants to switch to user ernst in
another language, but for me it would be of great help, because when I
answer questions or report bugs it is very hard to remember the exact
wording of the whole menues of several programs. The way of copy and
paste half answers into the editor, save them, log out, change language,
look for the menu, copy and paste the other way round is a bit time
expensive <vbg>
