The program did work. Only some additional functionality was not
enabled, that's exactly what recommends are for. If you want full
functionality, you should install them.

The error message might be improved, but I do not intend to maintain
patch against upstream forever, especially because it would have to also
include translations. Feel free to report to upstream and try to find
some error message which will be more helpful and could be used in more
distributions.
