Just install the package from Jaunty, it is compatible with Karmic.  To do this you visit the repository page for the package:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libstdc++5

Then scroll down to "Download libstdc++5" and choose your architecture
(32-bit = i386, 64-bit = amd64).  When the download page opens just
click the link for a mirror in your area.  After the file has downloaded
then a window should pop up allowing you to install the package.
