Now running emacs "23/1+1-4ubuntu2+22.2+0ubuntu6.1" 
Because 23 is now available (more or less), I'm steering clear of "-snapshot"

Call this "Works For Me" I guess -- I don't see the problem presently.

Seems likely there has been some change, seeing this very strange
Version string.  I would be happy to have only emacs23, but that doesn't
seem possible at this time.
