This should be fixed with 0.38, that I just uploaded to lucid:
 piuparts  (0.38) unstable; urgency=low

   * piuparts.py:
     - Add support for using LVM snapshots. Thanks to
       Patrick Schoenfeld for the patch. (Closes: #559449)
