So this is likely a bug in the upstream build stuff; in this case, I
find it likely that it's due to the use of AM_PATH_GTK2 (told you! ;-).

There is a way to workaround a broken upstream build system like that one, but it would be best to fix the build system to not cause the extra libs to start with (root cause).  If it's very hard to fix, you can try passing:
LDFLAGS = -Wl,-z,defs -Wl,--as-needed
to the build.
