At least someone else has packaged it in Debian experimental. Maybe
we'll see it trickle down from Debian some day:

Did the ABI change? I'm hoping this new library will fix my MPEG2
problems I'm having with VLC. Even a recompile wouldn't be too bad if
>0.5.1 is in main.

It'd be nice to see experimental packages become available for Ubuntu
too.
