I lack details on what exactly happened here, but it looks like your install was more corrupted than you originally thought. Looking at the logs it appears you had MySQL 5.1 installed and try to downgrade to 5.0 ?

If you have no data to lose, I'd suggest purging the mysql packages
completely (sudo apt-get purge ...) and reinstalling them.
