I tried installing gnome-mplayer, which doesn't crash, but there are no
window decorations (no title or resize or any way to move the window).
With gnome-mplayer installed, mplayer still hangs, but now it actually
goes away when I choose "close" in the taskbar. (Just mplayer installed
alone persisted in the taskbar until I killed its process.)
gnome-mplayer was able to play a sound file just now. When I right-
clicked and chose Open With --> mplayer the app plays the first few
milliseconds of the audio file and quits and completely disappears. I
just looked in the logs and see two lines in several:
Jan 27 17:17:13 eee-aem pulseaudio[2130]: ratelimit.c: 134 events suppressed
Jan 27 17:17:29 eee-aem pulseaudio[2130]: ratelimit.c: 128 events suppressed
