OK, I've got Mplayer working now by following this howto here:

to install mplayer-nogui package from SVN, and then the SMPlayer front-
end.  This howto includes installation of gcc 4.3 as opposed to using
the older gcc 4.1

Perhaps this bug relates to a problem between the standard Ubuntu
MPlayer packages, and the older version of gcc?
