True: After installing Xubuntu, I almost immediately remove Abiword, as 
it has real problems with MS Word compatibility (at least the documents

How about separate meta packages?

For example: "Xubuntu-base", "Xubuntu-default-applications" and 
"Xubuntu-default-games"?

That way I can perform a dist-upgrade even without having to reinstall 
Abiword or other uninstalled applications...
