Hi Frank,
when the screen is garbled it is interesting to know:
- - the type of graphics card
lspci | grep VGA
- - the driver the Xserver uses
grep -i driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Sometimes things clean up when you switch to virtual terminal 1 with
this key combination:
Ctrl+Alt+F1
and then switch back to X with:
Ctrl+Alt+F7
