Thank you all for helping me. I realized it could be the "restricted
modules" (whatever that is!) and went to http://tinyurl.com/2pmqdx
which indicated what to do to resolve the issue.

In short, I did - sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-`uname
-r` and rebooted and my wifi was detected!
