Don't pay any attention to the OpenOffice complainers - try it
yourself and see if you don't like it. I am using 1.7ghz p4 laptop
with 900gig of available memory. AbiWord, the default installed
package, is slow, clunky, renders fonts very badly, can't handle Word
formatting. I actually can't even read the text in it. OO doesn't
load instantly - it takes about 15 secs but bfd.. And then it is
fast. Much faster than AbiWord, and has word processing features out
the wazoo. This afternoon I had 10 browser windows open, a large
graphic in gimp (talk about a bloated aplication), and editing a
document in OO. It was as fast as I'd ever want and if it was
swapping I didn't notice. I think people who complain about OO must
either have unrealistic expectations, poorly configured systems, or
running too many apps at the same time.
