[xubuntu-users] Upgrade from a console

Hi folks,

I have crippled my older Ubuntu version video and the monitor displayed 
is 'garbled' and unuseable.  Is there a method to upgrade from the 
console or the live CD?  I am willing to completely rebuild if necessary.

Specifically, is there a method to upgrade from recovery [terminal] mode 
of a crippled system [sudo apt-get upgrade fails].
 or, from a live CD.

Any help is appreciated.
