[xubuntu-users] Sound Problem: Is PulseAudio the Culprit?

I added to the xfce4-panel.  Just righ click on the top bar on your 
desktop and click "add new item.." or something similar.  There should 
be a plugin called mixer.

Upon adding the plugin you will be prompted to select which control the 
plugin manages.  In my instance I selected the one of the "Playback:" 
controls.

Does this make sense?  Let me know if you can get this far.
