[xubuntu-users] Xscreensaver oddity

On one of my machines, when xscreensaver is running and the system is
locked, when I type something or move the mouse, the pop-up window
where xscreensaver receives input for the password (and allows cancel
or new login) does not overlay the screen saver image that is on
display. The mouse appears and can only move within the area where
the window would appear, but the window not visible.
This happens with all the default screensavers contained in
xscreensaver except Fiberlamp, FuzzyFlakes or GLMatrix. I use
GLSlideShow.
Is anyone else seeing this?
I've had an exchange with Jamie (who wrote xscreensaver), and he
thinks my video driver may be at fault.
My hardware where this is happening is:
OS: 3.2.0-26-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 14 17:49:24 UTC 2012

I'm not really sure which video driver I'm running, but it looks like
fglrx (lsmod: size 3263886, used by 155).
My xorg.conf is pretty simple:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection
Thanks.
