Norman, have you tried going to Settings Manager -> Display and see if you
can change the resolution
OR if two monitors are detected instead of one.
Even though I have only one monitor, ubuntu made default a second fake one
with small resolution
so I had to switch the default to my real one! See if the same applies to
you.
