I've written this to the Ubuntu list before, so I will just link to
the post here if that is okay:

Basically, pretty much all the GUI front-ends for burning CDs
(Brasero, K3B, etc.) all use the same underlying command lines and
libraries to perform the burn.  For a long time, the ones that ship
with Ubuntu, by default are not that great and haven't been updated in
a while.  There are better ones you can get.

Install from this PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~brandonsnider/+archive/cdrtools

and try again. (the link has more detail including why the libraries
are different).
